Meaningful summer activities
Many of my clients ask me What should my child do during the summer? One of the easiest—and most meaningful ways is to take a summer course for high school or college credit. Whether online or in person, a single class can be a powerful way for students to stay engaged academically while still enjoying their break.
If the course is approved by a high school counselor and taken through a local community college, it can often be free, which makes this option especially appealing. Many accredited online programs also offer summer courses for around $350–$400 per semester, and some four-year colleges allow high school students to take classes directly on campus. These courses can help students explore academic interests, get a feel for college-level expectations, and demonstrate initiative.
While students don’t always need to take the course for credit, doing so—when available—can be a real advantage. Earning credit shows colleges that a student is willing to challenge themselves, manage their time, and learn independently. Even one well-chosen summer class can make the summer feel purposeful and set students up for a stronger academic year ahead.
