UC Applications Are Up, CSU Down
To add the complexity of the 2020-21 application year, the University of California saw the number of applications rise by 15% but the California State University system saw a decrease of 5%. Many thought the number of applicants for the UC's would go down due to fewer students traveling abroad, the financial hardship of sending a student to college during a pandemic, and some choosing to take a year off. Per the LA times Dec 18, 20, the UC accepted 250,000 applications with many more from California Latino and Black freshmen applicants, the UC president stated. Part of this may be due to the test-optional policy which was adopted this year making it more accessible to students who could not get a test date. The CSU system extended its deadline twice as some of their locations are worried about meeting enrollment numbers. When acceptance letters start coming mid-March, some students may find themselves disappointed as admissions became more competitive this year.
