November is UC and CSU month

November 30 is the deadline for the University of California (UC's) and the California State University (CSU) colleges. The UC's require students to answer four of eight prompts (350 words each) while the CSU does not have any essays to answer. The UC Personal Insight Questions should be answered as interview questions. During the UC counselor conference in September, they specifically stated that these questions are not essays and should not be written as such. They are to be answered directly as if the student was sitting across the table from the interviewer. Students should be authentic while telling their stories and share what makes them admissible to the UC colleges. Write clearly connecting the dots without using flowery language. I tell my students to omit their adverbs. Once students understand this, the personal insight questions become much easier for them to write.
